PRODUCT INFORMATION
Mitron® Flo is an early post-emergence selective herbicide for Broadleaf Weed Control in Beet Crops. It acts by both root and leaf absorption. Mitron® Flo controls a wide range of Broadleaf Weeds, including Fathen, Nettles, Amaranthus, Chickweed, Galinsoga, Groundsel, Shepherd’s Purse, and many others.
Active Ingredient:
700g/litre Metamitron.
Mixing Rates per Tank (Real NZ Field Use).
Label rates:
- Pre-emergence: 1.0 – 4.0 L/ha - Post-emergence: multiple low-dose passes.
- Max Total: 6.0 L/ha per crop.
Example: 200L tank.
Scenario A: 200 L/ha (1 tank = 1 ha).
- Light rate: 1.0 L/ha → 1.0 L per tank.
- Medium: 2.0 L/ha → 2.0 L per tank.
- Heavy: 4.0 L/ha → 4.0 L per tank.
Scenario B: 100 L/ha (tank covers 2 ha).
- 1.0 L/ha → 2.0 L per tank.
- 2.0 L/ha → 4.0 L per tank.
Typical real-world use (important).
Most beet programs don’t dump full rate at once:
Instead:
Split applications (e.g. 1–1.5 L/ha repeated).
Applied every 5–10 days.
Why?.
- Safer on crop.
- Better on small weeds.
- More consistent control.
Mixing Tips:
- SC formulation → shake + constant agitation.
- Use 200–300 L/ha water for good coverage Fine–medium spray.
- Spray weeds VERY small (cotyledon stage).
Best Alternatives / Rotation Partners.
Mitron Flo = Group C1 → same resistance group as Metribuzin (Metriphar) Linuron.
- So don’t rely on it alone year after year.
Key Tank Mix Partners (Very Common).
- Ethofumesate (core beet partner).
- Expands control (especially grasses).
Often tank mixed:
- Mitron + ethofumesate = standard beet program.
- Phenmedipham / desmedipham (where used).
- Boosts post-emerge broadleaf control.
- Residual partners (pre-emerge).
- Helps extend control window.
- Resistance Strategy.
- Rotate away from C1 when possible.
- Use different chemistry in rotation crops.
- Avoid Continuous beet + C1 herbicides.
Suitability by Crop (CRITICAL).
- Fodder Beet.
- Sugar Beet.
- Mangolds.
Perfect Fit (Main Use).
Controls:
- Fathen.
- Chickweed.
- Amaranthus.
- Shepherd’s Purse.
Works best:
Early post-emergence (tiny weeds).
This is a core herbicide in beet programs.
Not Suitable For:(High crop damage risk outside label crops).
- Don’t use outside Beet Crops.
- Maize.
- Brassicas.
- Pasture.
Weed Spectrum (What it’s good at).
Strong on:
- Fathen.
- Chickweed.
- Amaranthus.
- Nettles.
- Groundsel.
- Shepherd’s Purse.
Weaker on:
- Nightshade (moderate).
- Wireweed (moderate).
- Most grasses.
That’s why It’s almost always tank mixed.
Safety & Use Risks.
- Harmful if swallowed or on skin.
- Causes eye/skin irritation.
- Very toxic to aquatic life.
Practical Risks:
- Spray drift can damage other crops.
- Soil persistence → possible carryover.
Avoid:
- Sandy soils + heavy rain (leaching risk).
Key Practical Takeaways.
Strengths.
- Excellent early broadleaf control in beet.
Flexible:
- Pre + post use.
- Works well in split-dose programs.
Weaknesses.
- Weak on grasses.
- Needs small weeds to work well.
- Same resistance group as:
- Linuron and Metribuzin.
Typical NZ Beet Program (Simple Example).
- Pre-emerge: Mitron + Ethofumesate.
- Early post (cotyledon weeds): Mitron (low rate) + partner.
- Repeat: Every 5–10 days.
Goal:
- Keep weeds tiny at all times.
- Mitron vs Metribuzin (Quick Insight).
