Reply 600 is a non-hormone Herbicide for the control of Blackberry, Gorse, Broom, Sweet Brier, Ragwort and other Woody and Broadleaf Weeds.
Active Ingredient
Contains 600g/kg Metsulfuron-methyl in the form of a Water Dispersible Granule.
What It Controls:
Targets a wide range of Woody and Broadleaf Weeds, including.
- Gorse.
- Broom.
- Blackberry.
- Sweet Briar.
- Ragwort, Thistles.
- Privet, Willows, Wild Ginger.
- Strong on hard-to-kill Scrub and Brush Weeds rather than Grasses.
How It Works:
- Absorbed through Foliage and translocated through the Plant.
- Stops cell division in growing points (Roots + Shoots).
Symptoms:
- Growth stops quickly.
- Visible effects are slow (weeks).
- Eventual Plant death.
- Like most Group 2 Herbicides: slow but very thorough control.
Application Insights: (From Label Guidance).
- Works best on actively growing Weeds (Spring → Autumn).
Often used with:
- Pennitr8 for better uptake.
Can be applied via:
- Knapsack.
- Handgun.
- Aerial.
- Spot Gun / Stump Treatment.
- Extremely low use rates (grams per 100 L or per ha), so accuracy matters.
Very Important: (Pasture Warning).
- Highly damaging to Ryegrass & Clover.
Soil residues can:
- Prevent Pasture re-establishment.
- Persist for months.
Label Guidance:
- Wait ~3 months before oversowing.
- Test small areas first.
Withholding / Grazing:
- Do not Graze with Dairy Animals for ~3 days after spraying.
Resistance Management:
- Group 2 Herbicide → resistance risk.
Application Rates & Recommendations:
- Rotate with other modes of action.
- Prevent surviving Weeds setting Seed.
Barberry:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 35g.
- Knapsack Rate/10L: 5g.
- Mistblower: 10g.
Recommendation: Best results on bushes under 3 metres: treat from November to May.
Blackberry:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 20–35g.
- Knapsack Rate/10L: 5–8g.
- Mistblower: 10–16g.
- Boom Aerial / Ground: 200–300g.
Recommendation: Use the highest rate on harder to kill Blackberry types such as those occurring in Northland and on the East Coast of the North Island. Reply 600 may be applied from November to June, but best results will be obtained from treatment from January to May. Whenever possible use ground application equipment. After treatment, when the canes become brittle, slashing, burning and/ or intensive stocking with Sheep or Goats is recommended to prevent regrowth. Re-growth may require treatment two years after spraying.
Bracken:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 35g.
- Knapsack Rate/10L: 5g.
- Mistblower: 10g.
- Boom Aerial / Ground: 70g.
Recommendation: Apply when fronds are unfurled (Jan-June) but before frost browning. Best results can be expected when plants are burnt in Spring and frond regrowth is sprayed in the following March to June.

Broom:

Recommendation: Apply from November to May to actively growing bushes. Ensure the addition of Pennitr8 Penetrant at 100 mI/100 litres.
Fennel:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 5g.

- Boom Aerial / Ground: 50g.
Recommendation: Treat when actively growing.
Gorse:

Hawthorn:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 35g.

Recommendation: Best results on bushes under 3 metres: treat from November to March.
Inkweed:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 25g.
- Knapsack Rate/10L: 5gv - Mistblower: 10g.
- Boom Aerial / Ground: 50g.
Recommendation: Treat when actively growing.
Kanuka/Manuka:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 30g.
- Knapsack Rate/10L: 5g.

Recommendation: Apply at any time of the year, but reduced control coverage of tall growing bushes. Aerial: Apply at least 400 litres water/ha. The addition of Pennitr8 Penetrant at 1.5 litres/ha is recommended when applying aerially.
Matagouri:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 5g.
- Knapsack Rate/10L: 5g.
- Mistblower: 10g.
- Boom Aerial / Ground: 170g.
Recommendation: Apply when bushes are actively growing, generally December–April. The addition of Pennitr8 Penetrant at 1.5 litres/ha is recommended when applying aerially.
Old Man’s Beard:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 35g.
- Knapsack Rate/10L: 5g.
- Boom Aerial / Ground: 170g.
Recommendation: Treat from November to May. Add Pennitr8 Penetrantat 100 mI/100 litres for Handgun, 10mI/10 litres for Knapsack and 1.5 litres/ha for Aerial applications.

Recommendation: Apply in Spring and Autumn when actively growing.
Ragwort/Thistles:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 2.5–5g.
- Knapsack Rate/10L: 1g.
Recommendation: rate on multicrown plants. Direct spray to the centre of the plant. Spraying remove stock until the treated plants are dead.
Sweet Briar:
- Handgun Rate/100L: 35g.
- Knapsack Rate/10L: 5g.
- Mistblower: 10g.
- Boom Aerial / Ground: 170g.
Recommendation: Apply from November–April. Ensure complete coverage.
Wild Ginger:

- Do not Plant Trees within 2 months of Spraying.
Safety & Environmental Hazards:
- Causes serious Eye Irritation.
- Very toxic to Aquatic Life (long lasting).
- Very toxic to Soil Organisms.
Key Precautions:
- Avoid spray drift.
- Do not apply into or near Water.
- Protect non-target Plants.
Bottom Line:
Reply 600 = heavy-duty Scrub/Brushweed Herbicide Extremely effective on Gorse and Woody Weeds.
- Works slowly but thoroughly (Root Kill).
Needs careful use because:
- Strong soil residual.
- Damages Pasture species.
Caution:
Must be used strictly according to label directions.
