PRODUCT INFORMATION
Sodio® 50WG is a Selective post-emergence Herbicide for the control of certain Broad-leaved and Grass Weeds in autumn and spring sown Wheat, Durum Wheat, Triticale, Ryecorn and Barley.
Active Ingredient:
50g/kg Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium and 150g/kg Mefenpyr-diethyl (safener) in the form of a Water Dispersible Granule.
Where It’s Used:
- Wheat (including Durum).
- Barley.
- Triticale.
- Ryecorn.
Not Used In:
- Oats (label restriction).
What It Controls:
- Grass Weeds (key strength).
- Annual Poa.
- Ryegrass.
- Lesser Canary Grass.
- Broadleaf Weeds.
- Chickweed.
- Cleavers.
- Spurrey.
- Yarrow.
- Broadleaf Dock.
- Stinking Mayweed.
- One of the few ALS herbicides that hits both Grasses + BLWs in Cereals.
How It Works:
- Absorbed through foliage.
- Moves systemically through plant.
- Inhibits ALS enzyme → stops growth.
Result:
- Growth stops quickly.
- Symptoms develop over 1–3 weeks (typical ALS pattern).
Application Guidance: (from label/tech guide).
- Spray volume 200–300 L/ha.
Apply With:
- Fine droplets.
- Even coverage.
Critical Requirement:
- Must add Result® oil-based surfactant → essential for performance.
Mixing.
- Half-fill tank → add product → agitate.
- Add other products if needed.
- Add Result® Spraying oil surfactant last.
- Maintain agitation throughout.
Tank Mixing: (Important nuance).
Can Mix With:
- Diflufenican (Difflan).
- Isoproturon (IPU) → improves Broadleaf Spectrum.
But:
- If targeting Grass Weeds, avoid mixing → reduces Grass control efficacy.
Key Limitations: (Best on).
- Small, actively growing Weeds.
Reduced Control On:
- Large Weeds.
- Stressed Weeds.
- Like all ALS Herbicides timing is everything.
Resistance Management: (CRITICAL).
- Group B = high resistance risk.
Label Guidance:
- Rotate with other modes of action.
- Use in mixes where appropriate.
- Avoid repeated solo use.
- Ryegrass resistance is a real risk in NZ systems.
Safety & Environmental:
- Causes eye irritation.
- Very toxic to aquatic life (long lasting).
- Toxic to soil organisms.
Key Precautions:
- Avoid spray drift (can damage crops nearby).
- Keep out of waterways.
- Use PPE.
- Simple way to think about it Tristar = Broadleaf only, Sodio 50WG = Grass + Broadleaf (more complete Cereal option).
But:
- Comes with higher resistance pressure.
Bottom Line:
Sodio 50WG = versatile cereal Herbicide.
Strengths:
- Controls both Grasses and Broadleaf Weeds.
- Low use rate.
Weaknesses:
- Resistance risk (Group B).
- Needs oil + good timing.
Caution:
Must be used strictly according to label directions.
